The Trustee Role

All about responsibilities, governance & expectations

If you are new to being a trustee, you should set aside some time to read the two documents linked below. This could take a little while, so get a cuppa and a biscuit.

Responsibilities & Governance

Good governance in charities is fundamental to their success. A charity is best placed to achieve its ambitions and aims if it has effective governance and the right leadership structures.

Good governance enables and supports a charity’s compliance with relevant legislation and regulation. It also promotes attitudes and a culture where everything works towards fulfilling the charity’s vision. It is the aim of the Code to help charities and their trustees develop these high standards of governance.

Expectations of Trustees

The Essential Trustee guidance explains the key duties of all trustees of charities in England and Wales, and what trustees need to do in order to carry out these duties competently.

The Charity Commission’s guidance: The essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do should be read and understood by all trustees, and here’s a helpful quick summary of the six main duties of trustees.
