Play when getting ready for bed

Getting your child into a regular bedtime routine will help them relax and have a good night’s sleep which in turn will help them to be more alert and ready to deal with what the next day may bring. Building in some play as part of this routine will help to make this time more fun for both you and your child, as well as making it a time that they look forward to rather than resist! It’s also a great time for you to connect with your child and alleviate some of the pressures of the day.

    Laundry basketball

    As children are taking their clothes off before getting into bed, place a laundry basket in the middle of the room and see if they can throw the clothes directly into the basket. Score one point for each item on target!

    Bedtime hop scotch

    Lay their bedtime clothes and favorite bedtime book and toy out on the floor from their bedroom to another room and they have to land on or near the item before they can pick it up and put it on. If there's more than 1 child it could be made into a race.

    Sink or float

    Before bath time, choose some items together which have different weights or densities - a Lego brick, a small plastic toy, a beaker, a lolly stick, corks etc. Guess which will sink or float and test out your ideas in the water.
