For most children, a school assignment to build a model of a building means breaking out cellotape, lollipop sticks and construction paper. However, for eight-year-old schoolgirl Emily, it was a chance to display a talent for model-making; though she probably didn’t expect her model would be displayed inside its inspiration!
Emily and teachers at Bradshaw Community Primary School donated the model to Eureka! The National Children’s Museum following the completion of a class project. The children’s museum plans to display the model in the galleries.
‘They didn’t want to throw the model away and when we saw it, it was obvious why.’ Rachel Skinner, Visitor Services Manager at Eureka! said ‘Not only was the level of detail something we’d expect from a GSCE architecture student, but it was obvious that a great deal of care had gone into it, from the shape of the building to photographs of the galleries placed inside’.
Emily, a Year 4 student who enjoys drawing and arts, built the scale model of Eureka! as part of a term-long class project where the children built a models for a bus tour around Halifax. The children picked an area of Halifax to research and give information on, creating models for their final project. According to her father, Mateufz Kominiko, Emily is also interested in 3D modelling, a skill which both her parents practice in their work as dental technicians.
Sharon Carroll, a Year 3-4 teacher at Bradshaw Community Primary School said: ‘When Emily’s model came in we were all surprised at the high standard! Usually, children use toilet paper rolls and lollipop sticks, but Emily came back to us with an architect’s design of Eureka!. We were amazed, and we loved it. She’d obviously spent a lot of time on it’.
The model is currently on display for corporate visitors to the museum offices, and will be on display to the public after a protective display case has been sourced.
